About the program

A Manufacturing Internship with Ashland is an opportunity to begin to learn the real world application of your engineering studies. It is an opportunity to learn about the chemical industry, problem solving and project management. Each intern will be assigned important projects to manage, which will include planning, design, unit operations and manufacturing interface. This allows the intern to fully experience a number of aspects of a manufacturing engineer career with Ashland. In addition, the interns are evaluated by Ashland as a potential entry-level new hire. An internship with Ashland is a great way to gain valuable experience in the chemical industry, develop real world skills and position yourself for a rewarding career.


Manufacturing Intern Job Description

The manufacturing intern position is responsible for assisting Ashland personnel with troubleshooting, problem solving and continuous improvement associated with our products supplied to the pulp and paper industry.

Typical projects include: development of the process for manufacturing new products, cost reduction, and automation improvements. You will learn to work with the various departments within our plants. You may have an opportunity to interface with other manufacturing sites, research and/or sales.


Qualifications

  • Successful candidates will be working towards a bachelor's or master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills are critical for qualified candidates.
  • The ability to speak English and excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for this position.
  • Experience with Autocad or other control and operations software would be a bonus.

Compensation

The amount of pay that our interns receive is determined by annual compensation studies to insure that you are receiving a fair market offer based on your major and progress towards graduation. You will also receive $450/month to assist with your housing costs. In addition, Ashland will pay for the mileage from your home/school to your internship location at the beginning of the internship and back at the end. This will be paid at the current federal mileage rate ($0.585/mile for 2008). Also, lodging and food costs will be covered when traveling from campus/home to our site/customer mill and return after internship is completed. We do not pay for moving vans or rental cars for Interns.

We do not pay for your mileage from your summer/temporary residence to your primary place of work. However, if during the summer you are asked to visit other plants or customer mills, you will be compensated for the miles driven during those trips and for food and lodging that might be necessary.

Also, we make available an advance for you at the beginning of your internship to assist with costs of transitioning from school to summer life. (Note, if you elect to receive the advance, the amount of the advance and taxes will come from your first two full paychecks.)
